Review: Jacob Swartz B&B

Jacob Swartz House

For our vacation this week, we stayed at the Jacob Swartz House Bed & Breakfast in New Market, VA. I booked there mainly because I liked the idea behind the business: host only one guest or party at a time in a separate cottage.

Our stay was relaxing, private, and memorable. Virginia, the owner, was friendly and attentive when we talked–but usually left us to ourselves all day. We were free to be as quiet or as loud as we wanted, and we could freely roam the 3.5 acres the B&B sits on.

The cottage had a sun room that overlooked the forest and a river at the bottom of a small hill. It also had 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, two living rooms, a bedroom, a loft with another bed, a grill, and plenty of outdoor seating. The cottage could easily sleep 4 people, reducing the cost by quite a bit ($150 for two vs. $200 for four).

Virginia served breakfast at our convenience, and always on time. I thought it was delicious and plenty, but Emily had dietary restrictions (low carb) that caused problems for Virginia. To her credit, she tried hard and sometimes would go as far as making two completely different meals for us.

On top of breakfast, we always had a different homemade dessert waiting for us in our fridge when we returned in the afternoon. Coming home was always exciting. What dessert would we get that day? Once, it was lemon meringue pie. The next day, a fruit parfait. Another day, she made a dessert with Splenda so Emily could eat guilt-free. I loved those desserts…

We will definitely stay again with Virginia. Visit before she sells the place and re-retires to a beach community in South Carolina! It’s her dream. She certainly deserves it.

In brief: Jacob Swartz B&B exceeded our expectations and Virginia treated us like family. We can’t wait to visit again.
