I slept like a log last night. It seems that since landing in Panama all of my stressors and worries have disappeared. It’s palm trees and relaxation for the next 6 days.
Dennis had read about a new German bakery in Boquete, called Morton’s, that he wanted to try so we headed out in Penny (our rental car) shortly after waking and drove through Boquete. We had arrived at the mountain village in the evening and hadn’t been aware of the truly stunning landscape surrounding us. We headed to Morton’s and I had a cinnamon role and a coffee, while Dennis had a pastry and a smoked salmon sandwich on an asiago bagel. All of it was delicious.
I attempted to find an hojaldra at a local cafeteria to no avail. I will continue my search.
We parked Penny in downtown Boquete and almost immediately Dennis spotted a truck with coconuts full of pipa. If only I could have recorded the joyous sound he made. For $1 he got an ice-cold coconut that they expertly opened for him. He carried that coconut around, sipping out of his straw, happy as could be.
And when he had sucked it dry, they cut it in half for him so he could get to the meat.
Something tells me we will be visiting this truck again tomorrow.
We also stopped at the pop-up table of an Argentinian man who makes jewelry out of copper where I bought a ring. We wandered around the town, window shopping, until I came across a shop selling artisanry.
In 2008 I visited my friend Deb’s indigenous Emberá community of Parará Parú in the Darién jungle. They make all kinds of crafts, and had just begun making earrings out of palm fronds. I bought a pair that I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, over the past 7 years they have completely fallen apart. But when I walked into the shop in Boquete I found a whole display of similar earrings. When I asked the woman where they came from she told me they were all the way from an Emberá village in the Darién. I have no idea if they are from Parará Parú but I had to buy some.
I love them!
After our stroll around town we headed to a local spa where Dennis got an hour long therapeutic back massage. I used that time to sit in the hammock at our AirBnB villa, working on blog posts and relaxing. The view from the hammock:
I picked Dennis up from his massage, both of us nice and relaxed, and we made a pit stop at Romero’s, a grocery store. Much to my extreme excitement, Romero’s carries Dux! They are my absolute favorite cracker and I haven’t been able to find them anywhere. I even looked at the Machetazo (my old Dux supply store) and they didn’t have them.
So now I’m back in the hammock, eating Dux, and working on blog posts, with the birds and an aguacero as the perfect soundtrack.
